Heat pump blowing cool air on the first cold night
October is when a Florida heat pump gets asked to heat for the first time since spring. Cool air from the vents is not always a failure. Air that never warms the room is.
Give it twenty minutes
A heat pump does not blast hot air the way a furnace does. The supply air is milder. Set the thermostat to heat, not emergency heat, and wait. Emergency heat runs the electric strips alone. It will warm the house, and it will show up on the power bill if you leave it there all night.
When it is a repair
The outdoor unit is a block of ice, the air is still cold after twenty minutes, or the house never climbs. That can be the reversing valve, the defrost board, a failed heat strip, or a thermostat stuck in emergency heat. Turn a frozen unit off and call. Forcing it to keep heating is how the compressor fails.
