How often does my air conditioner need maintenance?

• An air conditioner's filters, coils, and fins require regular maintenance for the unit to function effectively and efficiently throughout its years of service. Neglecting necessary maintenance ensures a steady decline in air conditioning performance while energy use steadily increases. We recommend your unit to be maintained every 6 months.

What are signs of wear and tear on an air conditioner?

• If you notice that your air conditioner is starting to wear down, it doesn’t always mean replacement is necessary. However, some issues are more severe than others. The first sign will be an increase in electricity use to run your air conditioner. You may also notice that the cooling unit starts to turn on and off frequently, cooling your house unevenly as it pumps different amounts of air into different parts of the house.
• If you have a newer model that is less than 5 years old, most issues should be handled through regular maintenance of your air conditioner. Have your coils cleaned and cooling units checked at least once a year.
• However, if you have a unit that’s more than 10 years old, a replacement unit may serve to alleviate these problems and cut down on you energy use, as most new models are far more efficient than those made 10 or more years ago.

My AC keeps icing up?

• An air conditioning system that keeps icing up can be caused from a variety of things. The first step to check is your air filter. A dirty air filter will restrict air moving across the evaporator coil and cause ice to form. Ice forming on the air conditioning unit puts high stress on the blower motor, compressor, and metals inside the unit. If this condition is not addressed immediately the result can lead to motor failure, compressor failure, damage to home, refrigerant leaks, and/or bigger refrigerant leaks. If the air filter is clean then call us immediately to prevent damage to your home and/or air conditioning equipment.

I have a manufacturer’s warranty, so do I really need a maintenance contract too?

• Maintenance contracts will satisfy the requirements and obligations of all of the major air conditioning manufacturer warranties. It is important to bear in mind that manufacturer warranties are only valid if the equipment has been used and maintained in accordance with their specifications and recommendations, in a similar way in which car manufacturers require that the vehicle be serviced and maintained throughout the life of the warranty.

Why does my system seem to need more refrigerant each year?

• An air conditioning system that needs recharging of refrigerant on a regular basis is leaking and needs repair. Leaking refrigerant not only causes your unit to lose cooling capacity and use more energy, it’s also very bad for the environment. Refrigerant gases released into the atmosphere are one of the worst culprits in depleting the ozone layer.  Be sure to choose a service provider that uses the latest technology to find refrigerant leaks, since the old methods are very time consuming and will cost you more money.

What size system should I have installed?

• The right size system is paramount in your home. Too large and your system will short cycle and not control humidity correctly. Too small and it will run continuously.
