Air Conditioning: UV Light System

Having a UV light system installed in your home is necessary if you are wanting to keep away the natural growth of mold and other harmful bacterias. While there are other options to have your system thoroughly cleaned with your yearly maintenance, having a UV light system installed will regularly maintain and prevent the growth of natural viruses and bacterias. This will ensure that you and your loved ones are living in the most clean and healthy environment possible.

FAQ About Air Conditioning: UV Light System

What is a UV light system, and how does it work?

  • A UV (ultraviolet) light system utilizes ultraviolet light that is placed with your homes HVAC system, to eradicate and kill harmful bacteria and natural growth, such as mold and mildew. The UV light system also targets other airborne pathogens and contaminants that are harmful to the human body. This system also utilizes PCO technology, which is shown but the U.S. Department of Energy to convert more than 95% of the harmful bacteria and contaminants to harmless carbon dioxide and water molecules.

How would installing a UV light system benefit me?

  • Not only will having a UV light system get rid of natural growth, such as mold, mildew, and other harmful airborne contaminants, but it will also help people who suffer from allergies and/or respiratory issues. This can improve the air quality that you are breathing in, decrease most smells and odors that are traveling within the ducts of your home. It is a cost effective addition to your HVAC system and home.

Is UV light harmful?

  • Just as the UV rays in the sun are harmful to our eyes and skin, the UV light bulbs can be harmful to look directly into for a short period of time. This is not something to worry about, as the UV light systems are installed within your ductwork and HVAC system, away from any direct exposure. It is best practice to turn off your lamp prior to switching out bulbs, and maintain all necessary precautions (e.g. wear gloves to handle, do not touch the glass of the bulb to your skin, and do not directly stare into the lit bulb). Our technicians can safely handle any maintenance or replacements to your UV light system.

What maintenance does a UV light system require?

  • There is not much maintenance needed for your UV light system. The bulb will need to be replaced every once or two years, depending on the model that you have. Our technicians will be able to help further explain how often you will need to change your bulb(s).

What is the difference between a UV light system and air filtration system?

  • An air filtration system is another option that effectively works at killing airborne particles and contaminants within your system, such as a UV light system will do. The main and most important difference between the two systems is that air filtration will not target the natural growth (mold, mildew, bacteria) that UV lights are able to eradicate. The air filtration system is designed to kill airborne odors / vocs, biological and particulates.

What does the CDC say about UV light?

  • The CDC recommends and encourages hospitals to utilize UV light systems in order to keep the flow of air within their buildings clean. They have recognized that UV light effectively kills airborne bacteria and particles.
